ShipStation’s Feedback and Fresh Ideas Forum is moving!


We have started the process of moving our ideas forum to a new home in the ShipStation Community.

As of August 4th, 2021, this Feedback and Fresh Ideas Forum is no longer accepting new ideas, votes, or comments. However, this forum will remain visible until shortly after the new Ideas board on the ShipStation Community goes live. After that date, this forum will no longer be visible.

If you would like to post an idea after August 4th but before the new Ideas board is live, we have created a temporary discussion board in the community for you to do so. Once our new Ideas board is live, our moderator will move all posts to their permanent home.

ShipStation has used this same forum since we released our very first version back in 2011. In that time, we’ve implemented hundreds of our users’ ideas! But, as our users and our product has evolved, we’ve realized the way we seek and manage our users’ feedback must evolve as well. Starting in September, all feedback and ideas discussions will take place in the Ideas board of the ShipStation Community

If you are not already a member of the ShipStation Community, please join! You can participate in user discussion boards, read exclusive community blog posts, earn rewards through community exclusive events, and much more. To join, go to community.shipstation.com and click the profile icon. You’ll be prompted to log in to your ShipStation account and then redirected back to the community where you can set your unique username and customize your profile (if you wish). Unfortunately, we cannot move all ideas to the new Ideas forum. The posts we are not moving are being set to the  "Archived" status in this forum.


The posts we do move will maintain their statuses, voter count, comments, and link to the original poster.

  1. Automatic printing of Packing Slips for new orders

    Because this original request I made for this was closed when an unrelated feature was introduced, I'm creating a new one.

    I would very much like to be able to have the automation in ShipStation be able to print. This would allow me to have it automatically print all new orders that have downloaded, so that warehouse personnel know an order has come in when the printer starts spitting out packing slips. This is something we're used to having in a different product we switched from to ShipStation and it's the main thing we miss. With printing being done through…

    ShipStation’s new layout (formerly called V3) does currently show when both labels and packing slips have been printed through ShipStation (either via ShipStation Connect or downloaded from the Print pop-up… if you use the browser print option, we cannot track the print status). You can see the print status in the Shipments tab by showing the Label Printed and Packing Slip Printed columns, or by opening the Shipment Details screen.

    We will consider the feedback around auto-printing packing slips when orders import, but there are a number of challenges around this approach that need to be overcome (for example, how to handle when the printer workstation is asleep or there is a hardware issue and printing is unsuccessful – ShipStation doesn’t have a way to receive that kind of feedback from the printer and it would not be desirable to show a packing slip as printed when it actually hasn’t…

  2. Have different printers for international vs. domestic labels

    Please enable a feature that you can choose what printer will print labels. To be more specific: we want to print International Priority and express with the regular printer and the rest of the labels in the 4x6 printer.

  3. Different Printing Setups Apply to Different Users

    Different users that are in different offices/warehouse with different printers (thermal or laser) and print different size labels (4x6 and 8.5x11) should have the ability to have their own label/printer settings saved to their account instead of the need to switch setting every time globally.

    Hi @dom, thanks for checking in on this one. We’re still interested in this idea and we don’t have a definitive timeline on it. It isn’t on our immediate roadmap but it is something we’re always looking into.

  4. Make it possible to print labels and packing slips/items on Doc Tab

    Usually, you can purchase thermal labels with a doc tab addition on top of the typical 4x6" label. Well, on other programs like ShipRush, we should be able to print item names/packing slip information on the doc tab. This is really really useful!

We currently ship over a thousand orders everyday, and sometimes as high as 4 thousand or more orders on sale days.     Hi, @everyone! Can you help put this into perspective and add how often (relative to your single page packing slips) you’re needing to print additional pages?

    For example, in a week 3/4 of your orders require a single page for packing slips and the remaining 1/4 require 2 pages; very rarely does an order need more than 2 pages.

    I found the print drop down options did not do what I expected. The option for labels prints both the label and packing slips. The packing slip option just prints packing slips. What do you think about it being:
    --Labels (just labels)
    --Packing Slips (just slips)

    Hey @Alex, thanks for posting this! Printing gets a little tricky to talk about since there are a few different ways to set these up. What kind of formats/paper sizes are you looking to print for your labels-only, packing slips-only, and both label + packing slip?

  7. Being able to set the packing slip size by store instead of a global setting

    Currently, packing slips are a global setting applied to all stores. If you have multiple stores where some packing slips are 4 X 6 and some packing slips are 8 X 11, you need to change the account settings every time you print. Would be way more convenient to be able to assign the size of the packing slips by store so you don't have to constantly change the account setting.

    Hey, @csr! Thanks for bringing this up! We’ll keep this in mind when updating our packing slips. For now, we’d like to see your idea gain more support from other users before making a decision.

    Can you tell us what makes the packing slips different between your two stores? Hopefully this added information will help other users better understand your idea so they can add their input and votes.

  8. Provide WYSIWYG Editing for Packing Slips

    I'm fairly new to ShipStation, but it seems one of the obvious enhancements would be to allow customization of the packing slips without needing HTML skills...essentially, exactly the same interface available to edit the email templates.

  9. Make 4x6 packing slip in Landscape format

    Much easier to read if you make the 4x6 packing slip in a landscape format, You can increase the font size and still keep everything in-line.

  10. Allow manual Blind Shipping

    We do drop shipping for many customers and need to make the package look like it is shipping from our customer to their customer (even though we are shipping it). While shipping, we should be able to select "Other" from the warehouse field and manually type in a temporary "From address"

  11. print customs forms automatically

    Need a way to automatically print the commercial invoices (customs forms) when an international label is printed. This only currently affects UPS and FedEx since USPS is consolidated into the shipping label itself. However, having to leave the shipping area to go to shipped items and find the order then click the paper icon... employees sometimes forget this step which then creates an exercise in time management and phone calls to UPS/FedEx to fax the documents.

    If we could have a setting on the labels like we do with "print label with packing slip" but print labels with customs forms"…

    Hey @YFinder! Thank you for taking the time to post your idea. We’ll keep your idea in mind when updating our printing workflow, but for now we’d like to hear what users have to say about customs forms.

    In the meantime, there are two ways you can print these forms without leaving the Orders page:
    1. If you are shipping from the Order Details window, there is a paper icon next to the tracking number you can click to print.

    2, If you’re using batches and the Label Batch Status window pops up, you can access “Other Forms” by selecting the “Other Documents” menu located under "Packing Slips.

  12. Allow ShipStation Connect to run as a Windows Service

    I have ShipStation Connect installed on one PC in our office in order for all our other PCs to have access to a few printers. This works fine as long as my Windows user account is logged in (so ShipStation Connect starts up).

    However as soon as I log out, or if the computer must be rebooted and I'm not around to sign in to my account....ShipStation Connect never runs and nobody can access the printers.

    It should be possible to setup ShipStation Connect to run as a Windows Service instead, so that it starts with Windows, and not on…

    Hey @Kris, thanks for bringing this up! You’re right about logging out of your Windows user will not allow ShipStation Connect to run. This is something we’re reviewing for the future. For now, we’d like to hear from others on this before moving forward.

  13. Save third party accounts

    I would love the ability to save a third party account so we don't have to paste over the account number and zip code every time. We do a lot of shipping that requires shipping on their accounts.

    Also, we have employees in shipping that can't access that information and simply have to wait on a manager to print the label for them. A drop-down box with our saved third parties would help tremendously.

    Then we could also set rules to default imports to certain third party accounts we have set up. I know FedEx ship manager has this functionality…

  15. Disable archive doc when print DHL label

    I am using DHL and whenever I print a label, an archive document will be printed out automatically. I want a settings that can disable DHL archive doc as it is a wast of label. Since we are using Shipstation, it uses twice the amount of label and half of them now turn into garbage. Please let me disable archive doc print out in Shipstation like in Shiptheory courier settings.

    Currently, DHL requires the “Archive Doc/Copy” be presented to the carrier upon drop-off/pick-up of packages.
    We’ve seen a lot of comments for this being a waste of labels, however it is a requirement by the carrier.
    Would the consensus here be that a better option would be to have this Archive Doc/Copy print in a seperate method?
    For example: Labels are printed on 4×6, and the Archive Doc could theoretically be printed on an 8.5×11?

  16. Adding new packing slip sizes

    Hi there - we love Shipstation and are looking at ways to make our packing more and more efficient. We're in need of a different (smaller) sized packing slip (4x2) to fit on our packaging, while using a few of the variables that are available via Shipstation custom fields, Order information etc.
    The current sizes available 4x6 and 8.5x11 could theoretically work if we manually cut them but its too much work when you are trying to run an efficient operation, especially since Zebra and other printer providers have so many different-sized labels already available
    I think this can address…

    Hey @suyog! Thanks for posting this feedback here! We’ll keep this one in mind when researching features related to packing slips. For now, we’d like to see this idea gain momentum from other users.

    Can you provide us with a link to the label sizes you’re thinking for packing slips and what printer model you have that supports this?

  17. Allow more dynamic customization in document templates e.g. packing slip

    Allowing scripts in packing slips would enable vastly more powerful customization.

    You could reference external data from a server e.g. serial numbers.

    You could implement complex customs declarations and make the packing slip match. For example, if you have an item you don’t want to make a declaration for, such as an add-on or surcharge, it currently still shows up in packing slips, which customs officers may delay approval over.

    You could do arithmetic and so much more for custom tabulation.

    This currently isn’t possible due to the backend framework we use for our packing slip editor. However, we have a lot of feedback about packing slip template improvements that we are considering later in 2021.

    While it’s unlikely we’ll implement script support in our editor, there may be other ways to accomplish what you are trying to do so we will leave this post open for further feedback around allowing dynamic content options in packing slips (we are also updating the post title to be less “script” specific and more about the ultimate goal of your customization needs).

    Discounts have been a tricky thing to manage, but we do understand the importance of importing discounts into ShipStation.

    Currently, there is an option for Shopify stores to import a discount code into the ShipStation “Internal Notes” field. If you’d like to have this option enabled on your Shopify store for ShipStation, please contact our support team and ask them to enable the store setting “Shopify Discount Codes In Notes” on your connected Shopify store.

    All this does is send the discount code into your internal notes, but this can be useful so when you see that the total paid is less than the Total field in your order summary, you’ll have the discount code to reference directly in the order.
