Show Stoper ! USPS label custom message fields should allow more than 26 characters.
First of all, I understand certain carrier's label requirement may not allow this to fly across all carriers. This suggestion is for USPS or stamp.com labels. Currently, only 26 bigO chars can be displayed in each custom message field. However, what if a single sku# is longer than 26 chars? Or a customer ordered 2 items with 2 different skus which need to be combine shipped using one label while 3rd custom field is reserved for order note across the board? These are really common use cases sellers are facing daily and limited by current custom field capability in ShipStation. I strongly believe there are a lot of users other there like us using custom message fields to print out orders packing info so the warehouse can simply processing each order using just the shipping label without having to compare packing list which is a much easier work flow. There are a lot of old suggestion posts with similar issues and I would like to summary them into this more comprehensive suggest request.
Guys with similar issue, let's vote up and get this feature the proper attention it deserves.
Current ShipStation custom label message function is very limited. Here is my suggestion or I should say how the USPS label is being properly displayed via other shipping platforms. I used to be a developer and dba and I think a simple different approach will make this feature more dynamic.
1) Instead of making 3 message fields, create just one custom field which you can append different data fields from the exist list.
2) I agree there should be a hard char count limit but 26 is way too low. Total char count should be limited to the number of chars can be comfortably read off the bottom of a 4x6 thermal label with stamp.com format. Set a boundary of the char display section, DON'T simple set char count.
3) Don't use a bigO fixed font to display. Dynamically change the display font to smaller font if more chars need to be displayed. Same way how you would lower the address text font if the address contains long strings.
4) This is achievable with USPS/stamp.com label as we have printed way more than 26 chars on a stamp.com label using another shipping platform. If Fedex or UPS label format have different display requirement. Separate the custom field settings between USPS and others, after all, USPS is the number one carrier small businesses use. Don't punish the majority with minority requirement.
By allowing above features, seller can display a comprehensive order processing note on the label based on his custom need. This will make a lot people's life a lot easier.
I attached a real 4x6 stamp.com label capable of properly displaying longer custom fields.
